El Nino Farini, aka Lulu (1855-1939)
Sam Westgate, the boy acrobat and funambulist first performed at the age of ten as El Nino with his adoptive ‘father’, William Hunt (The great Farini). Sam reappeared as Lulu, a beautiful female trapeze artist, whose gender was accidently revealed when a catapulting device malfunctioned and Lulu was badly hurt.
Extract from The Ballad of El Nino:
I wore the gowns, I walked the wire,
I offered life and limb,
and every turn and every leap,
I risked them all for him.
